The peaceful village of Mykland is great for those who have a passion for hunting and gathering berries, herbs and mushrooms in the woods. Here, the kids start the training as first-graders in school, with air rifle shooting!

-My girl is six, and she already started training with air rifles and a gallery rifle, laughs Jeanette Selås.

-So yes, hunting and learning how to shoot and handle weapons safely start early here, she says.

Her hubby is one of the hunters of Mykland, so they have game meat quite often for dinner. A luxury, sure, but according to Jeanette it sometimes feels like too much of a good thing.

-But I really can’t complain about clean, great-tasting food from the wild, she says with a big smile.

Mykland has vast forests and freshwater lakes. It is an El Dorado for those who want to be close to nature and harvest from the wild. In Mykland, hunting is good food on the table, physical activity, the benefits of being outdoors, and good times around the campfire with fellow hunters.

Two people with a love for the gifts of nature are the couple Jannicke Modell Røhmen and Lars Johan Skjeggedal. They are active hunters and Lars Johan is the leader of the local shooting club.

-We mostly hunt moose, and sometimes deer. We have really talented dogs that accompany us. It's incredibly rewarding to go hunting; it's a great hobby, says Lars Johan.

They hunt on their own property, and they end up with a lot of self-shot meat for dinner.

-My favorite is deer heart, it's so good, says Jannicke.

-Baked potato with deer heart, for example – it's exquisite. Game meat is not only fantastic tasting but also healthy and locally sourced. A luxury product we have in abundance, she smiles.

This couple doesn't keep track of how many animals they've taken down. It's unimportant and not a competition, they say. What matters is not quantity but quality. One should be certain before pulling the trigger, as hunting should be conducted safely. Injuring animals is something no one wants.

-The most important shots are the ones you don't take, say the couple. And this is what is also taught to the young hunters in Mykland. One should have respect for animals and weapons.

In addition to hunting, Jannicke has learned the ancient art of preparing animal skins without the use of chemicals. It's important and, not least, fun to be able to use the entire animal.

The surrounding forests are also great if you simply like to hike and gather berries, mushrooms, and other edible plants. There are many hiking trails, and in the winter cross-country skiing is popular. There are illuminated skiing tracks in abundance in and around Mykland.

In the summertime paddling, fishing, and swimming are popular activites – Mykland has several beautiful freshwater lakes. Here, you can fish for trout, Arctic char, and perch. Great fun and delicious food! The lake closest to the village centre, Langevann, has a pier and a beach.

Jeanette, a mother of three, came to Mykland a decade ago. She fell in love, not only with the community, but also the nature in the area.

-For me, nature is key, and we spend a lot of time outdoors. We often go camping, and it's lovely to bike around here, she says.

The children in the family are used to sleeping outside, whether it’d be in a tent or a hammock. The many adventures and trips in the wild are documented on Instagram, in CampingKidsNorway. Sunny summer days or snowy winter mornings, sleeping outdoors great either way!

Back to the school kids and future deer hunters of Mykland. They attend the local primary school, which has a large football field, a basket court, a volleyball court, and a big gymnasium. There is no shortage of facilities, in other words.

-I absolutely love this place. We were quickly embraced by the community, and I've grown so fond of it. The atmosphere at the little school nearby is so welcoming, and the children have such a strong bond. It feels very safe to send the kids to school here in Mykland, Jeanette says.

As for the adults, there are also things to do that involve less nature and more socializing. Several organizations have activities, such as work-out sessions, tabata training, markets, quiz evenings and of course classes and courses for all things deer hunting - indoor air rifle shooting, shooting trials, and outdoor field and competition shooting.

The spirit of volunteerism and community in the village is described by many as fantastic, according to the local village association of Mykland.

-When we gather on May 17th and in other settings, it's incredibly heartwarming. Everyone knows each other, and people here are great at helping one another and showing up, says Jeanette, a mother of three.

In the center of Mykland, there is rocery store, sale of gasoline, diesel, and a charging station for electric cars.

Although rural, the village of Mykland is surrounded by the municipal centers of Evje, Birkeland, Osedalen, and Åmli, all within a commuting distance of approximately 30 minutes. Adding an extra 30 minutes will take you to the Danish ferry, Kjevik airport, Kristiansand, Arendal, or other small towns along the coast. A lot of the people of Mykland therefore commute for work, being that the distances to many bigger places are fairly short.

Mykland has around 400 residents, and a lot of villagers work in forestry or have jobs that are connected to the forest. Others work as farmers, with electricity generation or with tourism.

Undoubtedly, the surrounding natural resources and the stunning wildlife certainly is a big part of the everyday life for the people of Mykland. Both when it comes to business and pleasure.
