Piggsteinen, a Place to Set Your Mark
Besides savoring a refreshing cold glass of goat milk under the dancing northern lights – the thing you didn’t know was missing on your bucket list – the village of Nordkjosbotn has more on the menu. For those with a different palate, perhaps a cold Mack beer from the world’s northernmost brewery would be more to your liking.
There are many ways to enjoy Nordkjosbotn; fishing, hiking and taking in the breathtaking sight of the mountain Store Russetind. Also, you simply have to set your mark at Piggsteinen.
Let’s give you the background; it all started a long, long time ago. No one is sure exactly when. But back in the days, as now, Nordkjosbotn was a village many passed through. Its location was a safe route for people travelling in the winter.
About five kilometers from the village centre, people started scrabbling and carving their names at a huge rock named Piggsteinen (the spike stone). It became a rite of passage, literally speaking. And it continues today. Although modern travelers tend to swap carving tools for spray cans. Thousands of names have formed thick layers of paint on Piggsteinen, a vibrant testament to our inherited need to leave a mark.
