Aluminium from Alcoa Lista — casthouse and billets on the Lista peninsula

Alcoa Lista

Aluminiumonhydropowersince1962

E urope's most modern aluminium producer is not in a German industrial city or at a Dutch port. It is on Lista, at the southern tip of Norway, where Atlantic winds meet the mountains. Alcoa Lista has supplied European extrusion mills and foundries with quality products since 1962, powered by clean hydropower, built on deep expertise, rooted in Farsund.

What we do

Alcoa Lista produces aluminium for the European market. The process combines clean hydropower, proprietary technology, and advanced casting techniques, all within a workplace where safety and innovation carry equal weight.

Electrolysis and smelting

Aluminium is produced through electrolysis of alumina, an energy-intensive process powered here entirely by clean hydropower.

Ny-Søderberg technology

Alcoa's proprietary technology, implemented at Lista, reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the electrolysis process.

Casthouse and billets

Modern casting technology and pure electrolytic metal supply European extrusion mills and foundries with high-quality aluminium products.

Green aluminium

Classified by the EU as a strategically important material for the green transition: strong, light, and infinitely recyclable. Used in electric vehicles, solar panels, bicycles, and recyclable beverage cans.

Research and development

Major research projects are underway at Alcoa, with the goal of reinventing the aluminium industry for a sustainable future.

Safety as a culture

Health, safety and environment is not a policy here. It is a way of working. The plant is a model for how advanced smelting operations can be run with safety at the centre.

Work environment and culture

Alcoa Lista is a team-based organisation. Management works day shifts only, and it is the plant operators who run the facility. That creates a strong sense of ownership among employees, who have been at the plant for an average of around 20 years.

Development and recruitment

Alcoa welcomes newcomers and experienced professionals who want to work here. At the same time, the company builds local skills from the ground up through apprenticeships, summer placements, and scholarships for higher education.

Location

Where is Alcoa Lista?

Alcoa Lista sits on the Lista peninsula in Farsund municipality, at Norway's southernmost tip. 45 minutes from Kristiansand, surrounded by beaches, wind turbines, and open Atlantic landscape.

Region

Lister

Alcoa is one of around 60 partners in the Lister collaboration. The region has 38,500 residents spread across six municipalities, from the coast in the south to the mountains in the north. A labour market that functions across industries and municipal boundaries.

A view from the Lister region

Industry in Lister is diversified: aluminium, aquaculture, engineering, maritime tech, finance, retail, healthcare. That breadth means your partner does not need to work at the plant to build a career here. Lister has room for two.

Six municipalities, one shared hospital, one shared labour market, one shared cultural calendar. Driving distances are short: from Alcoa to Flekkefjord town takes around 40 minutes, to Lyngdal 30, to Tonstad in Sirdal one hour.

You live in one place, but the whole region is within reach. That is a real difference from a big-city labour market: no kilometre here is wasted. A short commute means more hours at home, more dinners with the family, more days that amount to something beyond getting there and back.

Farsund

Farsund is a white-painted coastal town on the Lista peninsula, with around 9,800 residents, three schools in the town centre, and beaches 15 minutes from the plant. The municipality blends coastal-town aesthetics with industry and farming in the same postcode.

Nurseries, schools, and a commercial and cultural life with roots going back to the sailing ship era. Farsund is small enough that you know the staff at the local shop by name, and large enough to keep children busy with activities all year round.

Kristiansand is 45 minutes away. Alcoa is 15. The school is under five. Farsund keeps distances short and horizons open.

Vanse

Vanse is the historic centre of the Lista peninsula, with around 2,200 residents. Old timber houses, a church from the 1840s, schools and nurseries, shops, and a local football club. All within walking distance.

Vanse school — part of the village's education provision

Ten minutes by car from the plant. For families who want walking distance to school and shops while the sea is just around the corner, Vanse is the natural choice on Lista.

The school, nursery, shop, and football pitch all sit within the same neighbourhood. Walking there is still the norm here, not the exception.

Vanse church, built in 1842, stands at the heart of the village and is visible from most of it. Around it, everyday life grows: smallholdings, family homes, and rows of detached houses that open onto farmland and the Lista horizon. Children cycle safely, neighbours lend each other tools, and community spirit still finds a place in the monthly calendar.

For many Alcoa employees, Vanse has been the choice for more than one generation. People do not move away when they start a family. They move here.

Borhaug

Borhaug sits at the very tip of the Lista peninsula, a classic fishing village with around 700 residents. Lighthouse, harbour, and houses facing the Atlantic. For those who want the sea first and town convenience second.

Borhaug school at the tip of Lista

Twelve minutes by car from the plant. Fewer services to choose from than in Vanse or Farsund town centre, but the air, the light, and the proximity to the sea give everyday life a different rhythm.

Borhaug is for those who want to see the ocean from the kitchen window. The wind is stronger here than further inland, but it is also what keeps the sky clear and the weather changing face by the hour.

Lista lighthouse and Hanangersanden beach are the closest walking destinations. There is a school and nursery in the village, and Vanse or Farsund town centre is just a few minutes away. Not a place without amenities, just a place where priorities are clear.

Those who choose Borhaug choose the sea. Everything else comes after.
