Mats and Ida built in Ålfoten

Both grew up in Nordfjord; they came back to build a house where the glacier meets the fjord.

Mats is a carpenter in a firm based in Måløy, so he is constantly on the move around the area. Ida is a nurse and works in Bremanger municipality. Two Nordfjord natives, they have built a house down by the fjord in Ålfoten — where the glacier meets the sea — and made their home there.

Two from Nordfjord

Ida comes from Hennebygda in Stad municipality and knows the Nordfjord culture well. She trained as a nurse at the college in Førde and worked some years at Nordfjordeid. This spring she changed employer to Bremanger municipality and the town hall in Svelgen.

«It’s fine to commute to and from Ålfoten,» she smiles. Mats, for his part, works for a firm based in Måløy, and his days as a carpenter take him constantly around the area.

New life in the village

Ålfoten LivOGLyst is something more people may have heard of — it is part of a larger initiative the county council has started, aiming to create new engagement, wellbeing and activity in the local communities of the county. The programme gives competence in local-community development and financial support for mobilisation and activities; for Ålfoten it has led to new activity on several levels in the idyllic village.

Mats and Ida live on Mats’s family farm in the area called Vik. «We have built a house down by the fjord, and we have it good there,» says Ida. The two Nordfjord natives have a three-year-old child and say it is good to live in Ålfoten.

We don’t have the same offerings outside the door as in Oslo and Bergen. But we have other qualities. For a young family like ours, that is actually more important.

Fjord, mountain and a child

Here they have school and kindergarten, access to fjord and mountain, and deer hunting.

«We don’t have the same offerings outside the door as in Oslo and Bergen. But we have other qualities. For a young family like ours, that is actually more important,» Ida explains.
