The village of Feda is known for its characteristic boathouses along the Fedaelva river. Preserving the wooden houses is so historically important that the homeowners along the river are obliged to adhere to the old building style. This village is simply good-looking.

Feda has just over 400 inhabitants and offers a daycare center, elementary school, nursing home, convenience store and a church from 1802. Facing Fedafjorden, there's a well-constructed small boat harbor present. Beautiful beaches, the fjord for recreation, and numerous hiking areas in the surrounding mountains await outdoor enthusiasts.

The sandy beach at Sande Skjærgårdspark is shallow and family-friendly. Here, you will find a public grill hut, benches, tables and restrooms. In Feda, you can also experience the breathtaking views from the tops Skomakertippen or Dyreknuden. Both are high and spectacular viewpoints. There are many possibilities for the outdoor-loving in Feda.

What's quite unique is that there is a residency requirement in the village, unlike the rest of the municipality. The beautiful Feda is not meant to become a place only for vacation homes; it is intended to be a vibrant community with children, laughter, and genuine everyday life.

In the 1700’s, Feda was an important center for trade. Dutch sailing ships entered the fjord, and there was a thriving merchant community. The harbor was sheltered and protected, which the crews of the sailing ships appreciated.

At the start of the 1800’s the prosperous herring fishing industry began in the southern part of Vestlandet. The need for barrels to salt and store the herring led the people of Feda to start barrel production on a large scale. The specific craftmanship was called “bøkring” – or coopering.

The barrel production continued until around 1960. Most of the barrels were exported, and at the peak, there were about a dozen cooperages in operation. Today, only one remains. It showcases the craftsmanship as it was done more than 100 years ago and is open to visitors during the summer season.

Today, it’s less about the herring and bøkring in Feda. But the historical traces are still present in this beautiful southern village.
